Pausa Circle  ·  Lifelong peer community

The place where
the practice continues

Monthly offline gatherings for founders and leaders who have been through a Pausa programme. No phones. No performance. Just people who understand — and keep showing up for each other.

What Pausa Circle is
A web of mutual care
built on shared experience

Pausa Circle is not a membership club, an alumni network, or a content platform. It is a peer-led space where people who have been through something together continue that practice in each other's company — for as long as they choose to.

It is
A peer-led space where members generate wellbeing for each other
A continuation of the Pausa Reset — the shared experience that bonds
A place where showing up honestly is the only expectation
A living organism that evolves with the people inside it
The most durable thing Pausa offers
What Pausa Circle is not
Not a network.
Not a subscription.
It is not
A networking group where connection is transactional
A content platform where members consume what Pausa produces
A loyalty programme or alumni database
A wellness subscription with a dashboard
A therapy group — though what happens there may feel therapeutic
People laughing together People gathered outdoors Friends spending time together
Nine foundational principles
Designed for depth,
not scale

These principles are not aspirational statements. They are structural decisions — synthesised from decades of community research — that determine how Pausa Circle is built, facilitated, and sustained over time. They apply to every Pausa Circle, everywhere in the world.

01
Shared experience as origin
The Pausa Reset is the initiation — not the marketing. The vulnerability of unplugging together becomes the founding bond, and every Circle gathering is a return to that shared root.
02
Radical horizontality
No expert-audience dynamic. No hierarchy of achievement. The founder with one employee and the one with two hundred sit in the same circle — and speak with the same weight.
03
Psychological safety as the container
Safety does not happen by being nice. It is built through explicit agreements, modelled vulnerability, and consistent follow-through — designed in, not assumed.
04
Reciprocity as the engine
Members generate wellbeing for each other — not consume what Pausa produces. Helping others is what sustains the helper. The first question is always "What are you offering today?"
05
Dunbar-informed sizing
8–15 members per circle — the intimacy threshold where trust forms deeply and every name carries a story. When a circle grows beyond this, it splits. Depth is always protected over scale.
06
Rituals over content
The theme of each gathering changes. The structure never does. Regularity and repetition build belonging more powerfully than novelty ever can. The ritual is the point.
07
Community care over self-care
An individual's wellness shapes the collective — and the collective shapes the individual. Care here is not personal. It is shared, mutual, and moving in both directions at once.
08
Co-ownership through distributed leadership
The community runs itself. Pausa provides the structure and training. The members hold everything else — including what happens inside each gathering, which is always theirs to decide.
09
Third place energy
Not home. Not work. A space where the professional mask is optional and the human underneath it is welcome. That quality is rare for founders. Circle is designed to be it.
People in a gathering
"Communities can't be built like a machine. They are a living, breathing organism — a web of human relationships: fluid, entangled and radically contingent."
Fabian Pfortmüller, Together Institute

One rule. The rest belongs to the members.

Pausa Circle gatherings happen once a month. What they look like is decided by the members themselves — the activity, the place, the pace. That is co-ownership in practice — Principle 8. The only non-negotiable is offline presence: no phones, no digital devices. When the device goes away, something else comes forward. Real presence is the thing founders most rarely experience, and the thing Circle is designed to give back.

Membership model
Reset is the heartbeat.
Circle is the rhythm between.

Pausa is designed around the idea that preventive wellbeing is not a one-time event — it is a recurring practice. Pausa Reset every three to four months. Pausa Circle filling the space in between.

🌿
Pausa Reset — your entry into Circle Every Pausa Reset participant receives Circle membership as part of the programme. The community begins where the Reset ends — seamless by design. Included in every Reset
🔄
Return to Reset every 3–4 months Pausa is on the preventive side of healthcare — not the crisis side. A deep reset each quarter keeps the instrument functional. Circle renews with each Reset, so the community stays continuous. Preventive, not reactive
♾️
Pausa Circle — ongoing, no expiry Once you are a member, the door does not close. The community grows as you grow — over years, not just for the duration of a programme. Lifelong by design
8–15
members per circle, by design

Small enough that everyone knows each other's name, story, and struggle. Large enough for genuine diversity of perspective. Dunbar's research identifies this as the intimacy threshold for trust-based social groups. When a circle grows beyond this, it splits — preserving depth, not diluting it.

For VC funds & ecosystem builders
Founder capacity is a
portfolio asset
The cost of a founder in late-stage depletion — in degraded decisions, team turnover, and lost momentum — is real and material. Pausa Circle is the infrastructure for maintaining that capacity, long-term and at scale.
Run a Sprint for your portfolio founders
A Pausa Sprint cohort for your founders, followed by Circle membership — the ongoing peer layer that maintains the awareness and systems built during the programme, between board meetings and fundraising rounds.
A dedicated Circle for your fund team
Partners, associates, and operators carry significant load. A Circle for fund teams creates the internal psychological safety and honest self-assessment that high-performance environments often structurally prevent.
Risk management, not a wellness perk
A founder in sustained depletion makes worse decisions and reads people less accurately. Pausa Circle catches the drift before it becomes a cost — the same logic you apply to monitoring financial systems.
Scalable across your portfolio cities
As Pausa Circle expands to new cities, portfolio founders in London, Berlin, Warsaw, or Nairobi can be part of a local circle — same principles, local context. A cross-portfolio community that compounds over time.

Who this is for
Pausa Circle is for people
who have already started

Circle is not where you begin. It is what continues. The door in is any Pausa programme. From there, the community is open for as long as you want to be part of it.

🌱
Founders and operators at growth-stage companies Who have been through a Pausa programme and want a structure for maintaining the practice — rather than a solo habit that gradually erodes when pressure picks up.
🏛️
Leaders inside larger organisations Department heads, senior operators, and team leads who carry founder-level pressure without founder-level visibility — and who need a space where they can be genuinely honest.
🔭
Ecosystem builders and investors People who support others' performance at scale — and who recognise that their own capacity to do that is also worth maintaining. A Circle for fund teams is available by arrangement.
Curious newcomers — starting with Pausa Open Pausa Open (July 2–3, DOMA Portugal, non-profit €215) is the lightest entry point. A 1.5-day gathering in nature that lets you experience the approach and quality of the community before committing to a full programme.
The Pausa ecosystem
Every programme
leads here

Pausa Circle is the sustained layer — the community that holds the work all other programmes begin. Start wherever makes sense for you.
